Our story
METRANS, a.s. started its activities in July 1991 as a specialized company to develop container rail / road transport services in former Czechoslovakia.
The first ever container block train to / from Hamburg was dispatched from terminal Prague – Uhrineves in February 1992. Still in 1992 was the number of weekly train departures increased from 2 up to 4-5 trains in both directions.
In 1993 was introduced intermodal train connection from Prague-Uhrineves to Bremerhaven. Until then most of containers were transported by chassis on road and sizable part of containers were transported by rail to private rail sidings, when empty containers were picked-up or redelivered back to sea port.
METRANS‘ logistics solutions enabled transport of loaded containers by rail in both directions while minimized transport of empty containers, thereby has increased for customers the whole transport efficiency.
In 1995 METRANS extended its activities while opened the second terminal in Zlin to concentrate containers in the region of Moravia (East part of the Czech Republic) and Slovakia, whereby extended rail transport distance and cut road transport distances.
In 1999 METRANS opened up the third container terminal in Dunajska Streda as an initial point for intermodal transport in the region of South Slovakia and Hungary.
Ambitious investment programme into terminal constructions and extension of handling and space capacity including purchase of specialized container rail cars with advanced parameters was in successive steps carried out in years 1995 to 1999, after entering of strategic partners HHLA (Hamburger Hafen and Logistics AG) and Deutsche Bahn (German railways) subsidiary for freight transport DB-Cargo Aktiengesellshaft, Mainz.
Thus the company got the boost for its permanent development and further great investments, especially in Prague-Uhrineves and Dunajska Streda terminals, carried out in 2006 – 2007.
